A Look to the Future of e-Learning and ATD Metro DC Year in Review
It has been a great year for the Metro DC Chapter of ATD! It will be an even better year in 2018! Come and celebrate what we have done together as talent development professionals. You will also hear from a panel of three e-Learning experts: Dr. Brenda Bannon, Dr. Stu Weinstein, and Kathleen Hill. The panelists come from higher education and the public and private sectors where they have led, managed and created e-Learning programs. Bring all your wicked e-learning questions! There will be time for you to Ask the Experts!
The panelists will discuss:
- The future of e-learning in talent development: both formal and informal
- The future for instructional designers in e-learning: both formal and informal
- How e-learning can support the concepts of social learning
- Their crystal ball predictions for the future…say 5 to 10 years out for e-learning technology, development, instructional designers, and learners
The panelists are:
Kathleen Hill is an instructional systems designer with 20 years’ experience in both the public and the private sector. Kathleen is a certified ATD Master Trainer and Virtual Learning Expert, and also holds certifications in facilitating synchronous learning and creating new manager training. Currently, Kathleen is designing eLearning for the Federal Systems Integration and Management Center (FEDSIM) in Washington D.C. Prior to FEDSIM Kathleen served as an instructional designer and program manager with the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), and a property manager for RAM Partners, LLC in Atlanta, Georgia. Kathleen has served in volunteer roles all over the world, and her desire to bring the world together drives her passion for good distance education and eLearning design. Kathleen has worked as a volunteer for the Peace Corps in Bulgaria, and has also served as a volunteer in Sierra Leone, Africa and New Orleans, Louisiana.
Dr. Weinstein’s 45 years of professional experience in U.S. federal, international, higher education, and commercial training settings encompasses researching, designing, developing, managing, and delivering intellectual capital, knowledge management solutions, and instructional products. He presently serves the federal government in the areas of Instructional Design, Testing, and Measurement. His accomplishments have been recognized through receiving a personal Reinventing Government Award from the Vice President Al Gore; IRS Commissioner’s Award from the Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service, Special Citation from the U.S. Customs Service, and Commendation from the U.S. Department of Commerce Deputy Undersecretary for Security.
Concurrent with his professional duties at Suntiva, he is a faculty member in the Instructional Systems Development Master’s Degree program at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, and a Lecturer in Adult and Human Resources Development at Virginia Tech. Dr. Weinstein has authored 68 articles, given 47 conference presentations, and co-authored four books in ISD and related disciplines. He holds a Ph.D. in Instructional Systems from Florida State University; and a Bachelor’s in Mass Communications and Master’s degree in Educational Media from the University of Miami.
Dr. Brenda Bannan is an Associate Professor in the Instructional Design/Learning Technology Design Research programs in the College of Education and Human Development at George Mason University. Dr. Bannan’s research interests focus on the application of instructional design and user experience (UX) design processes to learning and performance technology design research. Specifically, Dr. Bannan’s research strives to integrate learning theory, systematic design processes and emerging technologies to improve education, training and performance contexts. Currently funded by the National Science Foundation in the Smart & Connected Communities award program, Dr. Bannan leads a team developing a smart city solution for emergency response and medical team training integrating mobile sensor-based technologies, activity stream data and learning analytics. She also currently leads a volunteer action cluster in the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) Global City Teams Challenge entitled “SMART Emergency Medical and First Response Multiteam Systems.” This project recently garnered first place in Wearable Technology for Learning Design at the European Commission Technology Enhanced Learning Conference (EC-TEL) held in Toledo Spain. Her work has been published in the recent Internet of Things and Data Analytics Handbook published by Wiley and Sons and she has co-authored papers in multiple national and international academic journals. Dr. Bannan has also been invited a keynote speaker and panelist for numerous International and National organizations including most recently the National Science Foundation, National Institute for Standards and Technology, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the National League of Cities.
