Developing leadership competencies can only get us so far in improving leadership. Adult stage development theory provides insight into how we can transform leadership by expanding leaders’ capacity for engaging in more complex and diverse perspectives. Research at Washington University and Harvard University proves that there are stages of development that adults can achieve, much like the developmental stages for children. As people progress through the developmental stages, they perform more effectively in complex environments. Research has shown that organizations that are looking for transformation typically succeed when their key leaders have attained later stages of adult development. This is one good reason for anyone working within organizations to be tuned to what is possible at each stage. Now that this approach is hitting the mainstream, it’s a perfect opportunity for our community to learn the possibilities of adult stage development for ourselves and those we serve. In this interactive and reflective session, you will walk away with:

  • Clear understanding of the differences between horizontal and vertical development and how to apply both in developing leaders
  • A summary of the key stages of adult development and what is possible at each stage
  • Techniques you can use for the vertical development of yourself and the leaders in your organization
