While organizations rush to leverage the power of data and Artificial Intelligence, a recent survey shows that 77% of participating executives report that implementing Big Data/AI initiatives is a major challenge. And what stops them is not the technology, but the people side of the equation. They struggle with organizational alignment, culture, and change management—in short, strategy and leadership.
In this session, Dr. Michael Eagle of George Mason University’s Computational and Data Sciences Department shows how to guide leaders in thinking strategically about data and AI. He will provide tips and tricks for how to hire the right data expertise in order to build an effective data science capability. In addition, he’ll discuss how to facilitate communication between data science experts and senior leaders to foster mutual understanding. He’ll recommend resources that we can all use to make more informed decisions about how to leverage the power of data to achieve organizational goals. He’ll also answer your questions.
You’ll leave this session with strategies and tools to advise leaders on the use and thoughtful implementation of an effective data strategy, as well as resources for further exploration.
Presenter: Michael Eagle is an Assistant Professor in the Computational and
Data Sciences Department in the College of Science at George Mason University. Eagle obtained his Ph.D. from North Carolina State University in 2015. He was a postdoctoral fellow in the Human-Computer Interface (HCI) Institute at Carnegie Mellon University till 2018. His research focuses on deriving understanding from complex interaction data from intelligent tutors and video games, educational game design with strong empirical studies showing their effectiveness in teaching introductory computer science, and new methods of individualized student modeling in the Genetics Cognitive Tutor. He has worked in data science at Blizzard Entertainment and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment (Turbine Inc.) Michael received an NSF GRFP Honorable Mention award, is a GAANN fellow, and Freeman-ASIA recipient. Michael was also the PI on an NSF EAPSI grant, in which he traveled to Japan and collaborated with Japanese researchers in educational data mining.

Closest Metro Stop: Tysons Corner (Silver Line): You can walk through Tysons Corner mall to Route 7, cross the street, and walk to 1919 Gallows Rd (which is actually on Boone Blvd). Probably about a half-mile walk.
In addition, there’s a shuttle bus that leaves the McLean Metro at approximately 5:30 and 6:00 p.m. and arrives at Tysons International Plaza (1919 Gallows Rd) about 20 minutes later. We can coordinate rides back to the Metro after the meeting.
