This event aligns with the Personal, Professional and Organizational Application of ATD's Talent Development Capability Model.

Search ‘leadership development’ in an academic portal, you get close to 5 million results. Do a simple ‘google’ and you get 1.2 billion. But what exactly is ‘leadership’ and how can we be confident we’re developing ‘it’? Join Dr. Rita Hilton, co-author of peer-reviewed research (Hilton & O’Leary, Leading in Place: Leadership Through Different Eyes, Routledge, 2018) and experienced talent development leader to explore what it means to bring a modern, vertical development lens to designing leadership learning. The session will include a brief overview of the topic and exploration of key questions. For example: what data do we need to apply this lens in context; what questions should practitioners be asking (that maybe we haven’t been); what is the value add of taking a vertical development perspective?

Presenter:  Rita Hilton

Dr. Rita Hilton is an experienced talent development leader, executive coach, and independent researcher. She has managed transformation and leader development programs for diverse public organizations and published research on inclusive leadership—Leading in Place: Leadership through different eyes (Hilton & O’Leary, 2018). Rita applies the insights of vertical development to her work with leaders in all settings—either in individual coaching engagements or in design of adaptive leader development programming.
