This event aligns with the Personal, Professional and Organizational Application of ATD's Talent Development Capability Model.
“Finding a Way: working with clients resistant or hostile to coaching” is an exploration of why some clients resist coaching/change and how to find a way through that resistance. As a former executive coach in the FBI, Max Palomeque worked with many clients who resisted coaching. He learned that just because someone is resistant or even hostile to coaching does not mean they cannot be coached. Connecting with the resistant client requires a combination of empathy, acute observational skills, an analytical mind, and a robust toolkit of frameworks and techniques to expand the client’s perspective.
Through this presentation, Max will provide participants with a foundation for developing the skills needed to work with some of the most difficult types of clients. This includes discussion of the Transtheoretical Model (TTM), Bridges’ Transition Model, Diffusion of Innovation theory, external self-awareness, empathetic accuracy, sense-making, and more.
Building Personal Capability: this presentation involves the practical application of specific emotional intelligence components (external self-awareness, primal empathy, empathetic accuracy, attunement, social cognition, synchrony, influence, and more). The EI components serve as a gateway for how coaches can adjust their coaching approach to resonate with and for the client.
Developing Professional Capability: the utility of the techniques and concepts from this presentation can help coaches and leaders understand why some people may resist change more than others. Through this understanding, they may develop new strategies in communication, leadership, and management to foster a client’s understanding of change.
Impacting Organizational Capability: an important aspect of any coaching engagement is the potential for change. While some may embrace change, others may resist it. The concepts covered in this presentation applies not only to those resistant to coaching, but those resistant to change, be it individual or organizational change.
